Bio text
From natural dyeing and woodland weavings in the 1970s to Saori weaving, I have cultivated an interest in textiles. Presently my work centers on Saori weaving, often called Japanese zen weaving. Saori weaving is built on four principles articulated by Misao Jo, the founder of the movement. Often thought of the improvisational jazz form of weaving, Saori weaving aims to free one's inner creativity through the expression of self. Saori comes from two Japanese words: sa meaning self and ori meaning to weave. In additional to Saori weaving, I work with other fiber arts, such as the centuries old craft of felting and natural dyeing. An English and world history teacher for many years, I now explore the visual and tactile world of fiber arts.
