ESSENTIALS OF ACRYLIC PAINTING with Barbara eberhart

JANUARY 29 – 30, 10AM – 4PM
$145

If you’ve ever wanted to learn to paint, and didn’t know where to begin, this workshop is for you! With emphasis on the joy of creativity, we will also practice the basics that every artist needs to know. From beginners to long-time painters, everyone can benefit from these essential key elements to painting with acrylics. Artist Barbara Eberhart has taught her popular classes for 20 years in Hawaii, most recently through Santa Barbara City College, and her online zoom classes.

We begin by understanding the importance of the value scale and color wheel, and how it helps to add drama to your work. You’ll learn to create spheres, with reflected light, and then apply that to bowls and fruit. On your first day you can bring home a completed still life filled with lots of new skills and fun.

The second day is a lot of fun too, as we take our knowledge of volume and create a lovely floral; either a close-up flower, or a still life vase of flowers. You can bring whatever photos that inspire you, or you can use the many photos Barbara provides. Experimenting with color theory, Barbara’s “3-step method”, and even total beginners will be amazed at how rewarding painting can be!!

PLEIN AIR PAINTING WITH JESSICA SCHIFFMAN

FEBRUARY 5 & 6 – 30, 10AM – 4PM, with lunch break
$275

Painting the landscape from life is thrilling and can be challenging as well.
The world is filled with an infinite variety of color and value, and an overwhelming amount of detail. Patterns of shadow and light are changing each moment.
This workshop will help you to simplify and organize what you see, and go on to create satisfying, dynamic paintings with strong, logical dark and light patterns. Topics will include composition, focal point, perspective, and value (dark and light), as well as color theory. We will also focus on managing oil paint. We will explore underpainting, painting ala prima (layering wet paint without making mud), mixing paint, and more.
Some painting experience is advised.

What about a finger pointing directly at the viewer? In this workshop we will explore linear perspective, foreshortening, aerial perspective, overlapping and more. Exercises and projects will include analyzing master paintings and drawing from photographs, as well as drawing objects and scenarios from life and our imagination.
