Well-known watercolorist Moira Johannessen and professional batik artist Darleen Wilkerson will host a public art reception in our small gallery featuring some of their latest work. The artists will be on hand to discuss the techniques they used and what inspired them to follow their particular art medium.

The main gallery will also be open, so you can browse the artwork of more than 100 local artists who are currently on display. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Painting in watercolor is a challenging but rewarding experience. Moira has painted for many years in this medium and has achieved much recognition for her paintings. She has become an established teacher in Palm Springs at the Desert Art Center. “I like to challenge my students and have them experience a whole range of styles and subjects," she says. “This reflects my own interest in painting new subjects and trying different techniques.”

Moira has been in many local and national shows. She is a signature member of Watercolor West.

Moira was born in London, England, but has lived most of her life here in California. She and her husband moved to Palm Springs in 1996.

Fine Art Batik is time consuming and an intricate procedure often used to create abstract designs. It not often a medium used to depict realistic scenes of exotic local architecture which is what this artist specializes in. The current group of batik art pieces reflect the La Quinta area where Darleen in now residing.

Making batiks on cloth or on paper for me is fun. I have always been preoccupied with bright colors, textures and repetitive patterns and those attributes are what makes an interesting and creative batik. The process is time consuming and yet the results are unique to the medium and allows for wonderful surprises to appear no matter how experienced one is at applying the wax and dyes. These surprises are what make my batiks playfully whimsical. I have been told by my customers “your art makes me happy,” when I hear that I feel successful.

Darleen will also be showing her hand dyed silks to use as scarves or wraps.
